THE VIEW FROM PAEONIAN SPRINGS
Allahu Akbar!
This phrase is becoming more common in our military and our prisons.

One of the little talked about subjects in our daily ration of news from Iraq is the number of American military troops converting to Islam. Now I'm not talking about an epidemic here, but there is certainly enough movement to raise some eyebrows at the Pentagon.

As a military retiree, I do my share of visits to commissaries and base exchanges in the greater D.C. area. These military facilities are not the same as Wal-Mart or Target because you have to have valid military identification to enter or purchase anything. Like all shopping facilities, you see quite a number of women shopping for their families. Lately, I have noticed more than just a few women wearing traditional Moslem attire. Logic tells me that in most cases these women are dependents of military members. Therefore continuing in this logic, the husbands of these women are Moslem as well.

According to various sources, the number of soldiers converted to Islam might be as high as 15,000. The Army understandably has a much lower estimate. I think it might be much more because many soldiers might not want to publicize their conversions as U.S. Army Sergeant Matt Hernandes did recently.

This is the land of the free, one of our freedoms is the First Amendment to the Constitution of The United States, and I quote:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Did Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin or any other of the framers of the Constitution envision a time when one of the fastest growing religions in the country they founded would be a religion that possibly might desire to replace their constitution with Islamic or Sharia law. Probably not.

Islam is still a minority religion in this country, but I see a time when this might not always be the case. Truthfully, I can say among my Moslem acquaintances – which include a doctor, a restaurant owner, a regular driver who shuttles my wife to the airport, I see no danger in the growth of Islam, not any more than I do the growth of the Church of Latter Day Saints or Pentecostals. I only see a danger when Islam or any religion becomes radicalized by elements who seek to shove their beliefs down other people's throats - including mine.

I worry about our soldiers who convert in Islamic countries and become prey to radical imans who would try to subvert them, not to their religion, but to their bloodthirsty philosophy. And - I worry about young men who convert to and are influenced by radical Islamists in prison. They're in prison – so why is that a concern? The answer is obvious – because they eventually get out. They leave prison not rehabilitated but radicalized – easy prey to those who would enlist them in activities detrimental to peace and order. America in their minds is no longer their country, but the home of the enemy. Is this happening now? Yes.

Islam is very good at recruiting the disenchanted and aimless. It can take people whose lives are in shambles - restructure them, discipline them, and give them hope. Having law-abiding citizens who live productive lives is a desire of all societies. Perverting the tenets of Islam to a religious-social dogma that seeks to wreck our society could be a future nightmare that many of our leaders – steeped in political correctness – are currently refusing to deal with.

Please Islamists, Jews, Evangelical Christians, Roman Catholics, religious conservatives, Wiccans, Buddhists, Hindus, and mainstream Christians, and atheists, enjoy your freedom to worship as you please - or not, contribute peacefully to our society – but never become so radical that you would cause our government to take away one of the richest gifts given by our founders – The First Amendment!

Allah u Akbar, God is Great, Goshô wa daiji, Ram nam satya hai, Jesus Loves...
