THE BULL AND THE BIZARRE
What Goes Around...
Sex Scandled Senator faces Sultry Challenger

May 3, 2009

Years ago, I was told what goes around, comes around. It seems to be true in just about every field including or dare I say, especially politics.

Last year, when John Edwards endorsed Barack Obama for president, someone asked me what I thought about the move and what Edwards was promised if anything. My initial comment was big deal. Edwards waited until Obama had the nomination and then endorsed him. No guts to come out earlier when it might have meant something. I did say that if Edwards asked for anything, it would have been Secretary of HHS or a Supreme Court nomination. Of course, we all know that a few months later, Edwards revealed that he couldn't keep his pants on and has slipped into oblivion, until this week. His wife Elizabeth comes out with a teaser of her new book that discusses her husband's affair. Funny isn't it? The latest issues that Obama have dealt with in the area of appointments have been HHS and now a Supreme Court nomination.
Way to go John.
While scanning news pages this week, I found that another politician with infidelity issues has an interesting quandary. The one thing that you don't want in the voters face when you are running for public office is to have reminders of your faults daily.
Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) is running for re-election in 2010. Vitter was made known to the political scandal world when his name surfaced in the directory of the D.C. Madam. He admitted in 2007 to "a very serious sin in my past" and has been flying just below the radar ever since. Until now.
Vitter's opponent next year may be 29 year old porn star Stormy Daniels. Daniels, a native of Baton Rouge, is embarking on a "listening tour" across the state to meet voters and determine potential support. Her site claims that Daniels could present "the Pelican State with the opportunity to start with a clean slate–to elect a representative that we can be proud of, who will work tirelessly, and who will challenge the status quo."
Now most folks would not take seriously a porn star to be their next Senator. But the fact that she has been involved in the acting, directing and writing side of the porn industry, is not going to help Vitter. Her very presence in the race will remind voters subtlety of Vitter's involvement in another sex related scandal of the 1990's.
Stormy may bring to the race in Louisiana, something else that Vitter would like to forget. Her name alone could remind voters of one of the biggest disasters of the previous Republican administration. The storms of Katrina may haunt Vitter as folks will be reminded of his inaction during the blunders of FEMA in their own backyard.
Now only time will tell if Stormy shows up on the political scope of the voters of Louisiana. I this is a serious attempt for public office or a publicity stunt by her studios, only Ms. Daniels knows for sure.
Either way, Sen. Vitter may be facing in 2010 something he was hoping to avoid. Another political storm.
