Dear Paper Person,
Despite the fact that you did not leave any type of name, I will answer your question, though considering this column comes out every two weeks, I don’t know how much help this will be to your daughter.
The song I believe you are looking for is “The Miracle Cure” by the Who, off the album Tommy. There is also a song by Immature called “Extra, Extra” which also has these lyrics, though I am not as familiar with this song.
I heard that the lead singer of the band Left Banke, which did “Walk Away Renee,” was Steve Martin. Is this true?
The Steve Martin of “Walk Away Renee” fame is not the Steve Martin of TV and movie fame. Steve Martin of the band Left Banke grew up in the Bronx. Steve Martin the “wild and crazy guy” was born in Texas and grew up California. He was a writer for the Smothers Brothers TV show around the time “Walk Away Renee” became a hit. However, the Steve Martin of movie fame is an accomplished banjo player and used to use it in his comedy acts.
Dear Dr. Spin,
Whatever happened to the Commitments?
The Commitments were a fictional band created by author Roddy Doyle. His book was used for the film version of “The Commitments,” as he also co-wrote the screenplay. At the end of the film (and I assume also at the end of the book), the Commitments break up, due to the fact that most of them can’t stand each other.
Most of the actors in the film were/are actual musicians. Andrew Strong, who played lead singer Deco Cuffe, has actually released a few solo albums. Andrea Corr, of Irish band the Corrs, also had a role in the movie, though I’m not sure whom she played. The rest of the cast is probably working as session musicians, and you may find their names credited on various other artists’ albums, particularly those recorded in Ireland. To find out, I would get all the cast names and do searches on the Internet for each individual actor, if you’re that determined to find out. I’m not.
About the Author:
Dr. Spin is pretty sure neither Steve Martin appeared in The Commitments.
