Pierced_Casey White-Column debut. Every other Thursday, in this new column, Casey White shares his true experiences and thoughts as he encounters people along the way. As he says, "These are only snippets... little vignettes... written just as they happened... and then it's over."

It may only take a moment to watch, but the reflections may linger.

Pierced

She was a teenage server. After school. Probably 17. She had dark hair bleached blond, with shocks of light blue. She had a nose piercing and an eyebrow piercing. "Welcome, I'm Gina, your stherver." Tongue piercing. I asked myself what drives a person to pierce their body, causing pain and discomfort, creating barriers with strangers, and even barriers to normal eating and talking. Braving possible medical complications. Was it a harsh childhood? A depressing middle school experience? Is it a low self esteem reaching out for acceptance by pierced peers? I ask: "Why all the piercing?" "I don't know. Ith's cool, I guessths." Liar. It's much more than that. It has to be.
