Sort 158_Dear Jon-Our Very Bright Readers Write. ACTUAL LETTER TO DEAR JON:

Dear Jon,

Do you think that society is more stupid today than it was say, fifty years ago? It really seems as if people are less competent than they were even a decade ago. Whether you're calling a company for information, looking at school test scores, reading college papers, watching network programs, or reading current newspapers, it all seems to support the notion that we're heading downhill. What do you think?

Not As Smart As I Used To Be.

Dear Smart,

Keep reading. I am sure your question can be answered by the calibre of these letters.

Dear Advice Guy,

My girlfriend and I had a fight. She was all, "Way!" And I was like, "No way!" So she was like "Way!" And I was like "No way!" So she got all, "Whatever!" So I got all "As if!" And now we're not speaking to each other. Who was right?

Fighting in the Valley

Dear Valley,

Oh, I’m so sure. Get real!

Dear Jon,

There is this guy who is obnoxious, self-absorbed, and a real jerk towards women. He is also very hot. We have flirted many times at parties, and I think he wants me. If I just used him the way he uses women, would that be wrong?

Dear Bimbo,

Let me see if I understand the question exactly. You think that by having sex with this twit because he is handsome, that this will somehow teach him a lesson that he is a jerk? If you are going to “use” him the way he “uses women,” he will be “using” you. You will be another notch in his belt. You think leaving quickly or giving him the cold shoulder or not calling him the next day is going to matter to him? It won’t make any difference to him at all. In fact, if anything he will be relieved. Trust me, that creep wishes all women were just like you.

Babe, in YOUR ethical world, you would not be “wrong” to use him the way he uses women. You would be a slut, but you would not be wrong. If you thought, by having sex with him because he is “hot,” you were proving your moral superiority to this jerk, then you would be very wrong. I hope this is sinking in, doll.

Dear Jon,

I can't find my slippers. What should I do?

Slipperless in Seattle

Dear Seattle,

You should carpet the bedroom.
