A Puzzling Discovery
Note: This is the last entry of the 'Weekly Wallpaper.' I regret that this feature essentially died last summer, but look for my new blog beginning soon, tentatively called 'Digital Sketchbook.' Download (select your monitor resolution): Misadventures of the Regal Drake Part III: A Premature End June 18 We have encountered a myterious object on the eastern shoreline. It appears to be a metallic ball fused within the hard rock. Some of the crew believe it is not of this world, while others consider it a sign from God or an omen or some other nonsense. Since all evidence suggests we are the first humans to set foot on this island, I have concluded that good, scientific reasoning and deduction exposes it as nothing more than a remarkable natural formation. I am alone in this opinion. The wise man in the galley known as 'The Sage' has predicted that this object will somehow put a premature end to our journey, and this has the crew even more agitated than usual. If I'm not mistaken, I have reason to believe there are rumblings of mutiny, but I fear it not. Calm, decisive leadership will prevail. I am certain my next entry will tell of return to the harmony, good will, and hope with which this voyage began...

Palm Ridge Vista
Download (select your monitor resolution): Misadventures of the Regal Drake Part II: Lessons in Discovery June 11 In retrospect, of course, I would have ordered more water to be carried, but who would have expected to come across so little spring water on a mountainous excursion? Yet despite the severe dehydration and interminable complaints, I held my head high at the end of the day for the view was stunning, and we lost just one man. We now know the general lay of the land, and water will be ours tomorrow... or the next day at the very latest.

Twilight Coast
It's been a long time since I've played with Bryce. It's time to get reacquainted. You can get version 5.5 for free! To me, Bryce landscapes seem to beckon one's imagination, so I've decided to begin a series of narratives, with Part One appearing below. I don't know where this 'story' will go, just that it concerns a very inexperienced explorer and his unfortunate crew. Download (select your monitor resolution): Misadventures of the Regal Drake Part I: Arrival at Twilight Coast June 8 My eagerness to go ashore would not be quelled despite the general consensus to wait until morning. I must admit that the elation I felt upon touching the sand soon gave way to apprehension when we found little firewood and darkness fast approaching. A brief period of alarm ensued whilst I weighed our options. Indeed, even my first mate, Connors, flirted with blatant insubordination when I announced my decision to burn a longboat. Tempers subsided, as I knew they would, once we basked in the glow of fire and passed the drink. What began in protest was ended in celebration. Our adventure has begun with a most marvelous flame... (To be continued in mid-August.)

The official desktop wallpaper of The Partial Observer features original illustrations by Mark D. Johnson, founder and editor-in-chief of The Partial Observer.
Look for a new wallpaper every Tuesday — think of it as our weekly cover art a la "The New Yorker." The weekly wallpaper is expected to vary considerably in subject matter, although it will sometimes be geared toward significant events and holidays surrounding a given week. Some weeks might be elaborate, other weeks simple. Your (non-spam) comments are always welcome.
